Reinforce your clutch fork and replace it if you are fitting a clutch!My clutch recently needed to be replaced. It had started to slip and once removed I was amazed at how badly worn it was. This had only just started slipping in 5th gear. Typical land rover, it was prepared to soldier on till the end! Here it is once removed!Unfortunately I didnt take anywhere near enough photos to write a propper guide on fitting my clutch. The only thing I will say is it is possible without removing all the floor / seat box. All I removed was the gaitors / gearsticks and transmition tunnel. It was then possible to move the box far enough back (obviously after undoing the mounts, removing the propshafts, clutch slave cylinder and bellhousing bolts) to remove the old and fit the new clutch. Having spoken to various people, it appears that the problem with the clutch fork breaking is rather common. The rod pierces the fork and leaves you with a nitemare job. A local land rover specialist suggested I should fit a new fork whilst fitting my clutch and he also said he wouldnt dream of fitting a new fork without welding a plate on the back to reinforce it. We followed his advice and welded a plate to the back of the fork as below! Obviously this was then painted in an attempt to prevent rust. I believe it is possible to buy a stronger reinforced clutch fork. The standard one cost me about £12. Its up to you! You caould buy a reinforced, stronger heavy duty clutch fork or you could buy a cheap one like me and weld a plate on to make it stronger. |
