Prepare a 200tdi discovery for wading?

series 3 land rover wading offroad

I am no mechanic, nor am I an expert of any sort.  Please use all info on these pages as an idea only.  You make your own mind up and take your own chances!  As I understand it there are a few major areas you need to sort out.  I have covered them briefly below!

One thing I do know is you must prepare for water - if you don't it will cost far far more!

Engine Air Intake

Fit a snorkel, they look good and don't have to be expensive.  See my series snorkel page for info on how I built a series 3 snorkel.  See how to build a DIY discovery snorkel to see how another land rover fan made his!  For the discovery however I decided to buy one.  There are sereral poor quality items available on the likes of ebay but it seems to me there were only a few real choices for the discovery.  There was the safari snorkel (the one I fitted) the mantec snorkel and a home made job.  Making your own snorkel for a discovery looks harder than for a series 3.  Several people seem to do a good job of this so it must be possible, I just didnt fancy my chances!  Click here to see how I fitted my 200tdi safari snorkel

Axle Breathers etc

Several places sell extended breather kits.  Have a look on ebay or search on google for suppliers.  There is one on each diff that will probably require replacing if not extending (mine were in terrible condition) as well as on on both the gearbox and transfer box.  You will probably also need a wading plug for the timing belt casing.  It is important that you do fit these extanded breathers if you wish to venture into deeper water.  The diffs for example are known to suck in water especially when warm and plunged into cold water.  If you breathers are underwater, the water added to your oil will greatly increase wear to the diff and cv joints etc.  If you breather is blocked, the water will find a way in.  This usually means one or more seals will be destroyed.

Extras

If you have the time/money/inclination then removing the original land rover viscous fan and replacing with an electric one helps.  The standard fan doesn't half throw mud and water all over the engine bay!  Also remember not to go in the water with your lights on, your asking for popped bulbs at best!
