Prepare a series 3 petrol Land Rover for wading?

Series 3 land rover wading offroad

I am no mechanic, nor am I an expert of any sort.  Please use all info on these pages as an idea only.  You make your own mind up and take your own chances!  As I understand it there are a few major areas you need to sort out.  I have covered them briefly below!

One thing I do know is you must prepare for water - if you don't it will cost far far more!

Engine Air Intake

Fit a snorkel, they look good and don't have to be expensive.  See my snorkel page for info on how to build your own series 3 snorkel.

Ignition Electrics

Water and electricity don't mix.  If you have a petrol series, this is a problem.  Mine does surprisingly well in the deep stuff with only a few simple steps.  My distributor is covered with a rubber glove.  The tips are chopped from all 5 fingers and a lead fed through each.  This is a pain to do and doesn't last forever.  I am yet to find a better way.

My coil is seated in a Tupperware box on the bulkhead, the leads are fed through holes sealed with silicone sealant.  The plug ends of my leads are given a liberal coating of wd40 before i go near the water.

Other Breathers

I have fitted an axle breather kit that I bought from eBay.  This extends both diff breathers to the inside of my bulkhead.  I figured if it gets this deep I don't stand a chance anyway!  This kit also came with a wading plug to fit the bell housing breather - this is often forgotten about.

Extras

If you have the time/money/inclination then removing the original land rover viscous fan and replacing with an electric one helps.  The standard fan doesn't half throw mud and water all over the engine bay!  Also remember not to go in the water with your lights on, your asking for popped bulbs at best!
